Afulu Surf Breaks

Afulu is a hidden gem for surfers seeking variety, power, and solitude. The waves in this region range from fun and playful peaks to heavy, world-class barrels, offering something for every level of adventurous surfer. With a mix of left and right-hand reef breaks and even some beach breaks, there’s always an option, no matter the conditions.

Unlike more famous surf zones, crowds here are almost nonexistent, allowing you to enjoy long, unrushed sessions in pristine surroundings. Afulu also picks up more swell than Lagundri Bay in South Nias, making it a reliable surf destination with consistent waves throughout the season. Whether you’re looking for a mellow ride or a serious challenge, the waves of Afulu deliver.

Afulu Left aka Rock Pools: The Jewel of Afulu Surf

Rock Pools, the most well-known wave in the region, offers the best of both worlds. On smaller days, it’s a fun and playful wave, perfect for high-performance turns and cruising. But as the swell builds, Rock Pools transforms into a heavy, round barrel, delivering the kind of waves that leave a lasting impression.

Located just a short walk and paddle out from the bungalows, this is your go-to spot when staying at Afulu Surf Resort. Reliable and consistent, it works on all tides and all swell directions, ensuring there’s always something to surf. Whether you're chasing barrels or just looking for a fun session, Rock Pools has you covered.

Pantai Merah Surf: A Playful Right with Endless Possibilities

Pantai Merah, also known as Shifty’s, is a fun and playful right-hander located just a 10-minute motorbike ride from Afulu Surf Resort. Best surfed at low to medium tide, it’s an excellent choice for intermediate surfers looking for a more forgiving wave compared to the heavier barrels of Rock Pools.

Named Shifty’s because of its shifting peak, this wave keeps you on your toes, but when the conditions align—the right swell direction, size, and offshore winds—you might just score perfect almond-shaped barrels. More often, though, it’s a performance-oriented wave, ideal for carving and linking turns down the line.

Pantai Putih Surf Break: A Right-Hand Barrel

Pantai Putih, also known as The Pumpkin, is a heavy, slab-style right-hand barrel just a five-minute motorbike ride from Afulu Surf Resort. This wave is powerful and perfect, offering a true slab experience for intermediate to advanced surfers looking for a serious challenge.

Best surfed at low to medium tide with a small to moderate swell, The Pumpkin packs an unexpected punch for its size—fast, steep, and humbling. It’s one of the most consistent waves in the region and, despite its quality, rarely sees a crowd. More often than not, you’ll have it all to yourself. If you're chasing an intense, technical barrel without the hassle of a crowded lineup, The Pumpkin is waiting.

Gojek: A Hidden Gem for Fun, Playful Rights

Gojek is a fun and playful right-hander, located about a 15-minute motorbike ride from Afulu Surf Resort. Tucked away off the beaten path, this wave can be a little tricky to find, but our experienced surf guide, Dicky, will gladly take you there for an epic session.

Though short and fast, Gojek is a perfectly shaped right-hander that works best with a moderate-sized swell and offshore winds. It’s an ideal wave for intermediate surfers looking for a smooth, enjoyable ride.

👉 Exit Tip: Getting out of the water here can be tricky, so reef booties are recommended for added protection.

Afulu Beach Breaks: Fun, Playful Waves for All Levels

While Afulu is best known for its reef breaks, there are a few sand-bottom beach breaks in the area that offer a fun, mellow alternative. Right out front of our surf resort, the high tide can create some playful corners, perfect for cruisy sessions.

A 10-minute ride down the coast at Pantai Merah (Shifty’s), you’ll also find a few beach break waves that can be a great option for beginner to intermediate surfers looking for a more forgiving ride. While these waves may not be world-class, they provide a fun and uncrowded alternative when you're in the mood for something different.
